i don't use oils, nope. i get the impression that i use acrylics like oils, though. many many layers of paint are blended together, which i assume is how an oil painter paints. but, i'm not completely sure.
i will try to describe it for you.. first, i paint gesso over everything i decide i don't like. it takes sometimes 3 or 4 coats, and it hardly ever completely covers the mistake. but, that's okay, because what you've done is create a layer.
i decided i had to work with the red color of the hutch, instead of against it. there was no way i could get all that red out with gesso, so i used the red as an undercoating in a sense..working the color into the chair. Or rather, working the chair into the color.
i drew the chair outline in pencil over a couple coats of gesso. the red was still pretty bright at that time. so, i started adding layers of paint from there, allowing the red to still show through in bits and specks each time. it took quite a while, but before i knew it, the red hutch was gone, and the chair was there.
i hope this makes sense. i swear i'm going to video myself painting sometime. people keep asking me to do it, and it would be easier to show than tell. :) i'm just dumb as a rock when it comes to video, so i don't like doing it. this gives me a great idea for a blog post though...next time i make a mistake i'll try to at least photograph as i go along.
your self portraits are amazing! i love this one and all of of them! very inspiring, so happy you are sharing them here!!! happy weekend dear lulu. xoxooxoxoxox
